Joan Cortright started working with clay in college, and continued her education with Dr. Gary Irby and at Corcoran School of Art and Design. She joined the Ceramic League when she moved to Miami.
Joan Cortright’s "Curious About Clay?"
class at the Ceramic League
This class is for those of you who are brand new to clay or just want the opportunity to work in both wheel and hand building. Class size is kept small so register early to save a spot.
Wheel will take longer to get the technique mastered, but it is very therapeutic way to spend a couple of hours. Handbuilding will involve learning several different ways to make a piece from either a slab, coil or sculpted.
Weeks 1 and 2 Wheel: Learn how to center the clay (this is the hardest part), then you can start creating.
Weeks 3, 4, 5 Handbuilding: You will be given instructions on how to assemble different forms, from leaf platters, boxes, tile, etc. I also welcome ideas from you. If you have a picture or can describe what you want to make we will go over a plan to try and accomplish it.
Week 6 Glaze: We have a wide range of glazes that you can choose from to finish off all your pieces. You will come back at a later date to pick up your finished pieces as they have to be fired one last time to bring out the wonderful colors.
