Rose Quintana comes from Barcelona and has been a potter for 20 years. She has studied at both the School of Arts in Barcelona, Spain, and the Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton. Her works primarily use stoneware clay. She custom mixes glazes of many colors and usually employs techniques of both wheel throwing and handbuilding in the creation of her pieces. Her signature element, used frequently, is a beautiful, organic, winding, pulled handle. She is also creating a new line of mosaics with themes drawn from landscapes and inspired by nature. Utilizing both hand-made tiles and hand sculpted pieces that are enhanced with bright glazes the scenes create a narrative that evokes feelings, desires, memories and dreams.
Currently Rose is producing pieces and teaching full time at Clayworks, where she is the owner, in Miami Beach.
Rose Quintana’s Mosaic class at the Ceramic League of Miami
In this class you will get the opportunity to make an array of designs using mosaics. You don’t need any previous experience in working with clay.
The first class you will develop an idea and with the help of Rose come up with a design using books, magazine cutouts, photos or your own sketches. You will be instructed on how to roll your wet clay into slaps. This clay will then be cut into small pieces and fired in a kiln to make them hard.
The second and third week you will glaze (paint). They will be fired a second time to bring out the colors to a bright shine. Forth and fifth week will be the time to glue all those little pieces onto your back board to make up the pattern. On the sixth and final week you will apply the last step. Grouting. On this day you will get to see your piece transform into a piece of art that you have created.
