Susan Filley works with porcelain making pots that are defined by both elegance and a sense of gestural grace. Most are functional, and some are sculptural, but all are based on her love of good form and design coming from her foundations as a functional potter. This workshop will focus on her wheel thrown and altered forms as well as some surface decoration. The workshop will include demonstrations on wheel techniques for porcelain and altering techniques for vases, trays and her unique dancing teapots. Susan loves to invite discussion on firing, glazes, and studio techniques, including some of her tricks to avoid cracks. She has a concern for studio safety and focuses on body health, trying to help each person find techniques that work best for their abilities. The two day workshop will conclude with a demonstration and hands-on session on Susan's decoration techniques using porcelain slip. Each participant should bring at least one leather hard bowl, plate or tiles to try some new techniques.

Explore Paper Clay: a workshop which will focus on the use of this innovative material to make both functional pottery and sculptural forms. We will review how to make paper clay, bonding slips, and using it for hand-building ceramic forms. The instructor will use slides to illustrate forms that can be constructed with paper clay, and he will demonstrate such forms as cups, pitchers and teapots to give students a sense of the materials’ potential The class will also explore the use of texture, construction techniques, and decoration using paper clay. We will also make, test and use cone 6 glazes to finish off our pieces. This is a hands-on workshop so please bring basic hand-building tools with you to the workshop.
The workshop will provide paper clay for you to experiment with. Participants will receive written formulas to make paper clay and several interesting cone six glazes.
